The data situation in Mexico

Mobile data in Mexico is relatively affordable by global standards — a Worldwide Mobile Data Pricing study by cable.co.uk/BestBroadbandDeals placed Mexico 162nd out of 237 countries, with an average cost of about $2.03 per GB. Free Wi-Fi is easy to find across the country: virtually every café and restaurant chain offers complimentary access, as do the vast majority of hotels and Airbnbs. Many town squares, plazas, libraries, and municipal buildings now offer free public Wi-Fi too, though signal quality in busy public spaces can be inconsistent. For travelers who need dependable, fast connectivity beyond café hopping — especially for maps, rideshares, and translation apps while exploring — a local data plan or eSIM remains the most reliable option.

Local price/GB

$2.03/GB average for locals (rank 162 of 237 countries, cable.co.uk / BestBroadbandDeals Worldwide Mobile Data Pricing study)

Free Wi-Fi

Widespread — nearly every café and restaurant chain (including Starbucks and local coffee shops), most hotels and Airbnbs, and a growing number of town plazas, libraries, and municipal buildings offer free Wi-Fi, though signal quality in busy public spaces can be inconsistent.

Paid Wi-Fi

Uncommon as a standalone paid product — commercial Wi-Fi in Mexico is almost always bundled free with a purchase, meal, or stay rather than sold on its own.

Buying a local SIM in Mexico

Mexico's 2026 mobile line registration law requires domestically contracted lines to be linked to a CURP, but tourists can't obtain a CURP and foreign eSIMs used via international roaming are explicitly exempt — so in practice most visitors buying a physical prepaid SIM aren't asked to register personal details. Physical SIMs are sold everywhere: an official Telcel store operates inside Mexico City's airport alongside AT&T-branded kiosks and OXXO/7-Eleven counters, and OXXO stores selling Telcel SIMs are on nearly every street corner nationwide. Airport pricing runs noticeably higher than city or OXXO pricing for the same plans, and Telcel is the clear recommendation for coverage outside major cities — Mexico's telecom regulator (IFT/CRT) puts Telcel's guaranteed 4G coverage at roughly 87% of the population versus about 69% each for AT&T and Movistar.

KYC requirements

No CURP or passport registration required for tourists in practice — the domestic SIM-registration law targets Mexican-contracted lines and doesn't apply to visitors, who can't get a CURP anyway; foreign eSIMs used via roaming are explicitly exempt.

Wait time

Fast — SIMs are sold over the counter at OXXO convenience stores, carrier kiosks, and the airport Telcel store with same-minute activation and no appointment.

Wi-Fi calling

Wi-Fi calling lets you keep receiving calls and texts on your home phone number over an internet connection — including the data connection from your Jetogo eSIM — without needing a local SIM or number. Turn it on in your phone's settings before you travel (Settings > Phone > Wi-Fi Calling on iPhone, or Settings > Network & Internet > Wi-Fi Calling on Android), and your carrier will route calls to your regular number through data instead of a local cell signal, so friends and family can reach you exactly as they always have.

Frequently asked questions

Will my eSIM work in remote parts of the Yucatán jungle, Chiapas highlands, or Oaxaca's mountains?+

Coverage is excellent throughout the main Yucatán tourist corridor (Cancún, Playa del Carmen, Tulum, Mérida, Chichén Itzá), but it thins out in more remote terrain like the Chiapas highlands, Oaxaca's Sierra, and jungle backroads. eSIMs riding Telcel's network — Mexico's widest rural network — are your best bet for staying connected off the main tourist trail, though expect occasional dead zones on mountain passes and unpaved roads.

Which local Mexican carrier does my eSIM connect to?+

Most international eSIMs for Mexico connect via roaming agreements with one or more of the country's three major networks — Telcel, AT&T México, or Movistar — with Telcel generally offering the widest and most reliable coverage outside major cities.

Does Mexico's new SIM registration law affect tourists using an eSIM?+

No. Mexico's 2026 mobile registration law requires only domestically contracted Mexican phone lines to be linked to a CURP (national ID number) — it explicitly doesn't apply to foreign eSIMs used via international roaming, since that traffic routes back through your home carrier's network rather than registering as a Mexican line. Since tourists generally can't obtain a CURP anyway, a foreign travel eSIM is the simplest fully-compliant way to get connected in Mexico.

How does an eSIM actually work?+

An eSIM is a digital SIM built into your phone — instead of inserting a physical card, you install a small profile (usually by scanning a QR code) and your phone connects to a local or partner network for data. There's nothing to pick up at a store or swap in your device; the whole process happens over Wi-Fi in a couple of minutes.

Is my phone compatible with eSIM?+

Most phones from the last 4-5 years support eSIM, including iPhone XS and later, most Google Pixel models from the Pixel 3 onward, and many recent Samsung Galaxy, and other Android flagships. Check Settings > Cellular (or Mobile Network) for an "Add eSIM" or "Add Cellular Plan" option — if it's there, you're set. Your phone also needs to be carrier-unlocked.

When does my eSIM activate — do I need to already be in the country?+

You can install your Jetogo eSIM before you fly, but the data plan itself only starts counting once it connects to a network in your destination country — so there's no risk of burning through your allowance early. For most plans, connectivity kicks in automatically the moment you land and your phone finds a signal.

Can I use my eSIM as a personal hotspot?+

Yes — hotspot and tethering are included on Jetogo eSIM plans at no extra cost, so you can share your connection with a laptop, tablet, or a travel companion's phone.

What happens when I run out of data? Can I top up?+

You can top up directly from your Jetogo account in a couple of taps, without needing to buy a whole new plan or visit a store. Many travelers also use Jetogo's PayGo option, which lets you pay only for the data you actually use instead of committing to a fixed bundle.

Do I need a local phone number to use my eSIM?+

No — Jetogo eSIMs are data-only, so there's no local phone number involved. If you need to make calls or send texts, you can use an internet calling app (like WhatsApp or FaceTime) over your eSIM data, or rely on Wi-Fi calling to keep using your existing home number (see below).

What is PayGo and why does it start at $5?+

PayGo is Jetogo's pay-as-you-go option: you load a small starting balance — as low as $5 — and only pay for the data you actually use, with no expiration pressure or unused-data waste. It's a low-commitment way to try Jetogo or to cover shorter trips where a full data bundle would be overkill.

Will adding a Jetogo eSIM affect my existing phone number or home plan?+

No. Your eSIM runs alongside your regular SIM (physical or eSIM) as a second, independent profile — your home number, texts, and voicemail keep working exactly as before. You simply choose which profile handles data while you're on Jetogo, and switch back anytime after your trip.
