The data situation in Honduras

Honduras is one of the more affordable countries in the world for mobile data — locals pay roughly $0.78 per gigabyte on average, ranking 79th cheapest out of 237 countries and territories in the Worldwide Mobile Data Pricing study. Two carriers, Tigo and Claro, compete for coverage nationwide. On top of cheap cellular data, free Wi-Fi is fairly widespread: the government's "Internet para el Pueblo" program provides complimentary access at central parks and plazas in major tourist cities, and most hotels, cafés, and fast-food chains in tourist areas offer it free to customers. Coverage and reliability thin out quickly once you leave city centers, though — the Bay Islands, Mosquito Coast, and rural highlands have much sparser connectivity, which is where a dependable eSIM data plan matters most for maps, translation apps, and staying in touch.

Free Wi-Fi

Fairly widespread — the government-run "Internet para el Pueblo" program provides free public Wi-Fi at central parks and plazas in major tourist cities including Tegucigalpa, San Pedro Sula, La Ceiba, Comayagua, Tela, Santa Rosa de Copán, and Copán Ruinas, and most businesses in tourist areas (hotels, cafés, and fast-food chains like Pizza Hut, KFC, and Burger King) offer free Wi-Fi to customers.

Paid Wi-Fi

Uncommon as a standalone product in tourist areas — access is generally bundled free with a hotel stay, café purchase, or the government's public hotspot network rather than sold separately.

Buying a local SIM in Honduras

Buying a tourist SIM in Honduras is fairly simple in principle — Tigo and Claro both sell prepaid SIM cards for roughly $2, with data packages ranging from about $1 to $27, and registration just requires a passport, handled on the spot at an official carrier store in a few minutes. The catch is availability at arrival: neither of the country's two main international gateways reliably has a carrier kiosk. San Pedro Sula's Ramón Villeda Morales Airport has no Tigo or Claro reseller in the terminal, and reports on SIM kiosks at the newer Palmerola International Airport (which replaced Tegucigalpa's old Toncontín for international flights in 2021) are inconsistent. Tourists arriving at either airport are generally better off buying from an official store or convenience retailer once they reach town rather than expecting to find a SIM counter at baggage claim. No tourist-specific eligibility restrictions or SIM caps were found in available sources, and physical SIM cards are the only local option — Tigo and Claro do not sell eSIMs to tourists in stores or online.

KYC requirements

Passport required for registration when buying a prepaid SIM at an official Tigo or Claro store — no biometric or proof-of-address requirements were found in available sources, and no tourist-specific SIM caps were reported.

Wait time

Fast once you reach a staffed store — one traveler reported being connected within about 3 minutes of registering — but there's no reliable airport kiosk at San Pedro Sula or Palmerola, so budget time to reach a carrier store or convenience retailer in town first.

Wi-Fi calling

Wi-Fi calling lets you keep receiving calls and texts on your home phone number over an internet connection — including the data connection from your Jetogo eSIM — without needing a local SIM or number. Turn it on in your phone's settings before you travel (Settings > Phone > Wi-Fi Calling on iPhone, or Settings > Network & Internet > Wi-Fi Calling on Android), and your carrier will route calls to your regular number through data instead of a local cell signal, so friends and family can reach you exactly as they always have.

Frequently asked questions

Which airport will I land at in Honduras?+

If you're flying internationally into the Tegucigalpa area, you'll land at Palmerola International Airport (XPL), about 70km from the capital — Tegucigalpa's old Toncontín airport now handles domestic flights only. Other common gateways are San Pedro Sula (SAP) for the mainland, and Roatán (RTB) or La Ceiba (LCE) for the Bay Islands.

Does my Jetogo eSIM work on Roatán and the other Bay Islands?+

Yes. Tigo and Claro both provide 4G coverage across Roatán, Utila, and Guanaja's populated areas, so your eSIM stays connected for diving trips, ferry crossings, and island hopping.

Do I need to show my passport to use my Jetogo eSIM in Honduras?+

No. Passport-based registration applies to physical SIM cards bought in-country from a Tigo or Claro store. Your Jetogo eSIM is installed and ready before you fly, so it isn't subject to that in-country registration process — and it saves you from hunting for a carrier kiosk that may not exist at the airport.

How does an eSIM actually work?+

An eSIM is a digital SIM built into your phone — instead of inserting a physical card, you install a small profile (usually by scanning a QR code) and your phone connects to a local or partner network for data. There's nothing to pick up at a store or swap in your device; the whole process happens over Wi-Fi in a couple of minutes.

Is my phone compatible with eSIM?+

Most phones from the last 4-5 years support eSIM, including iPhone XS and later, most Google Pixel models from the Pixel 3 onward, and many recent Samsung Galaxy, and other Android flagships. Check Settings > Cellular (or Mobile Network) for an "Add eSIM" or "Add Cellular Plan" option — if it's there, you're set. Your phone also needs to be carrier-unlocked.

When does my eSIM activate — do I need to already be in the country?+

You can install your Jetogo eSIM before you fly, but the data plan itself only starts counting once it connects to a network in your destination country — so there's no risk of burning through your allowance early. For most plans, connectivity kicks in automatically the moment you land and your phone finds a signal.

Can I use my eSIM as a personal hotspot?+

Yes — hotspot and tethering are included on Jetogo eSIM plans at no extra cost, so you can share your connection with a laptop, tablet, or a travel companion's phone.

What happens when I run out of data? Can I top up?+

You can top up directly from your Jetogo account in a couple of taps, without needing to buy a whole new plan or visit a store. Many travelers also use Jetogo's PayGo option, which lets you pay only for the data you actually use instead of committing to a fixed bundle.

Do I need a local phone number to use my eSIM?+

No — Jetogo eSIMs are data-only, so there's no local phone number involved. If you need to make calls or send texts, you can use an internet calling app (like WhatsApp or FaceTime) over your eSIM data, or rely on Wi-Fi calling to keep using your existing home number (see below).

What is PayGo and why does it start at $5?+

PayGo is Jetogo's pay-as-you-go option: you load a small starting balance — as low as $5 — and only pay for the data you actually use, with no expiration pressure or unused-data waste. It's a low-commitment way to try Jetogo or to cover shorter trips where a full data bundle would be overkill.

Will adding a Jetogo eSIM affect my existing phone number or home plan?+

No. Your eSIM runs alongside your regular SIM (physical or eSIM) as a second, independent profile — your home number, texts, and voicemail keep working exactly as before. You simply choose which profile handles data while you're on Jetogo, and switch back anytime after your trip.
